Ritz Chicken Casserole Ingredients

See the recipe card below for a complete list of ingredients and measurements.

Bowls of shredded chicken, green onions, sour cream, soup, crackers, bacon, butter.
  • Shredded chicken – Use about 4-5 cups of cooked chicken for this recipe. Shredded rotisserie chicken works perfectly, or you can use leftover chicken from another meal. Chicken breasts or thighs work well if cooking from scratch.
  • Cream of chicken soup – This creates the base of your creamy sauce and adds rich flavor throughout the casserole filling. Cream of mushroom soup can be substituted if you prefer a different flavor profile.
  • Sour cream – Adds tanginess and extra creaminess to balance the rich flavors. Full-fat sour cream gives the best results for this creamy chicken casserole.
  • Ritz crackers – You’ll need about 2 sleeves of Ritz crackers for the topping. These buttery crackers create the signature crunchy topping that makes this dish special.
  • Butter – Melted butter binds the crushed crackers together and helps them turn perfectly golden brown in the oven.
  • Seasonings – Garlic powder and onion powder enhance the savory flavors, while fresh parsley adds a pop of color and freshness when serving.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Different proteins – Try this with turkey or even canned chicken for convenience. Poppy seed chicken uses a similar concept with different seasonings.
  • Cheese additions – Add cheddar cheese to the chicken mixture for extra richness and flavor.
  • Vegetable mix-ins – Green beans or corn work wonderfully mixed into the chicken filling for added nutrition and color.
  • Different crackers – Potato chips can substitute for crackers, or try crushed crackers of different varieties for unique flavors.
  • Spice it up – Add a bit of heat with cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes for those who like things spicy.

How to Make Ritz Cracker Chicken Casserole (step-by-step directions)

Two bowls: unmixed and mixed chicken salad with bacon, green onions, and sauce.

STEP 1. Start by preheating your oven to 350°F and greasing your casserole dish with cooking spray. In a large bowl, combine your shredded chicken with the cooked bacon, cream of chicken soup, sour cream, Italian Seasoning, and any other seasonings you’re using. Mix everything together until you have a smooth, creamy chicken mixture. (Photos 1 & 2)

In a separate bowl, combine your crushed Ritz crackers with the melted butter, stirring until all the crackers are well coated. Sprinkle the cracker topping evenly over the top of the chicken mixture. (Photos 3, 4 & 5)

STEP 3. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the casserole is bubbling around the edges and the top of the crackers has turned golden brown. Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving, then garnish with fresh parsley and enjoy this comfort food with your family. (Photo 6)

Recipe Tips

  • Use a food processor to quickly crush your crackers if you’re making a double recipe or want perfectly uniform pieces.
  • Quick prep means using store-bought rotisserie chicken instead of cooking your own – it saves time without sacrificing flavor.
  • Prevent freezer burn by wrapping tightly in plastic wrap and then aluminum foil if you plan to freeze portions.
  • Add poppy seeds to the cracker topping for a unique twist that adds extra flavor and visual appeal.
  • For a stronger onion flavor, use sweet onion diced and sautéed before adding to the mixture.

Storing Tips

  • Storage: Allow your ritz chicken casserole to cool completely before storing. This helps maintain the texture of both the creamy sauce and the crunchy topping.
  • Refrigerator: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days. The casserole reheats beautifully, making it perfect for easy lunches or easy dinners throughout the week.
  • Freezing: This casserole freezes well for up to 3 months when properly wrapped. Wrap individual portions in plastic wrap and then aluminum foil to prevent freezer burn. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
  • Reheating: Reheat in the oven at 350°F for 15-20 minutes if reheating the whole casserole dish, or use the microwave for individual portions. Cover with aluminum foil to prevent the topping from browning too much during reheating.

Recipe FAQs

Can I use chicken breasts instead of rotisserie chicken for this Ritz cracker chicken casserole recipe?

Absolutely! Chicken breasts work perfectly for this chicken casserole. Simply season and bake skinless chicken breast at 375°F for 20-25 minutes, then shred once cooled. This gives you the same tender results as leftover chicken or rotisserie.

What’s the best way to get perfectly crushed crackers?

Place your crackers in a zip-top bag and use a rolling pin to crush them. This method gives you control over the size – leave some chunks for extra texture in your topping.

How do I prevent the casserole from becoming too watery?

Make sure your shredded chicken is well-drained and not too wet. If using canned chicken, drain it thoroughly. The cream of chicken soup and sour cream should create a thick, creamy sauce that coats everything perfectly.

Can I substitute ingredients if I don’t have cream of chicken soup?

You can use cream of mushroom soup or make your own with chicken broth, flour, and cream. For a lighter version, try Greek yogurt in place of some of the sour cream. The key is maintaining that rich, creamy chicken base that makes this kind of casserole so satisfying.
