Expert Tips and Variations To Recipe

  • Make sure that you evenly spread the pie filling, cake mix, and butter. If you do not do so, there will be places that don’t cook properly.
  • You need to use butter, not margarine, for this recipe. The margarine has oil in it, which will make the cake oily and greasy on top, which you don’t want.
  • If you do not have a yellow cake mix, swap with a white cake mix.
  • Top the cake with ice cream, whipped cream, or even fresh berries, and enjoy.

Storage

With any of your leftover blueberry cake, you will want to store it in the refrigerator. The cake will last for 4-5 days in the fridge. You can eat the leftover cake cold or warm it up in the microwave for fresh oven warmth.

Or, go the extra step and freeze any of the cake you don’t plan to eat right away. Simply store for up to 3 months in the freezer. Thaw in the fridge overnight or warm it up straight from frozen.

Recipe FAQs

What is a dump cake?

Dump cakes are an old-school dessert that many church gatherings would find these cakes. They were so popular because you dump in your baking pan, top them with butter, and throw them in the oven. It is similar to flavor to a cobbler.

How long do you bake dump cake?

You will want to bake your dump cake for around 30 minutes. The top will become golden and you will see the dry cake mix soaks in the butter to make it a golden crust on top.

Can I use something besides canned pie filling?

If you want reach for 4 cups fresh blueberries and 1 cup granulated sugar. Mix that together and spread in the bottom of your baking dish. This works just as good as the pie filling, but with a more homemade feel to it.

Can I swap the blueberries out for other fruit?

Go right ahead and use any fruit you would like. Just do the 2 cans of pie filling or 4 cups of fresh fruit. You could even do a berry dump cake with blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries. Get creative and create a dessert that fits your flavor preference.
