Recipe Ingredients

Rum and Midori bottles with maraschino cherries on a white background.

Ingredient Notes:

  • Midori – This sweet melon liqueur gives the shots their signature Grinch-green color and fruity flavor. Make sure it’s well chilled for the best taste.
  • Coconut rum – Adds a tropical twist and smooth finish. Choose a quality brand like Malibu for the best results.
  • Maraschino cherries – Optional but recommended for the full Grinch effect. They represent the Grinch’s heart growing three sizes!

See the recipe card below for a complete list of ingredients and measurements.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Rum alternatives – Regular white rum or vanilla vodka can replace coconut rum.
  • Liqueur options – Other green melon liqueurs can substitute for Midori
  • Non-alcoholic version – Green Hawaiian Punch or Kool-Aid for a family-friendly version
  • Garnish choices – Add edible glitter for extra sparkle
  • Sweetener – A splash of simple syrup if you prefer sweeter drinks

Recipe FAQs

Can I make Grinch Shots ahead of time?

While you can mix the liqueurs beforehand, it’s best to add the cherries just before serving. Store premixed liquid in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.

Why is my shot not bright green?

The bright green color comes from the Midori. For the best color, make sure you’re using the correct proportions and a true melon liqueur.

Can I make these non-alcoholic?

For a family-friendly version, use green Hawaiian Punch or prepared green Kool-Aid. The taste will be sweeter and less complex.

Do I need to shake the ingredients?

A light shake or stir is sufficient since both liquids mix easily. Don’t overshake, as it’s unnecessary and won’t improve the drink.
