🐎 What is the Kentucky Derby?
Churchill Downs is one of the most legendary tracks for racing, and it has conducted thoroughbred racing and hosted the Kentucky Derby every year since 1875. The race is presented by Woodford Reserve. This race is 1 1/2 miles long and is run on a racetrack made of dirt in Louisville, Kentucky.
Twenty of the best horses compete in the Kentucky Derby, which is the larger field size than most racehorses ever compete on. The 20 horses that race travel along the road to the Derby through a series of 35 different races across the country and even the world. The top four horses that finish each race and the ones with the most points score a spot at the Kentucky Derby.
Every year, this race takes place on the first Saturday in May and draws large crowds in attendance. It is considered the longest continually held sporting event in America and one of the most prestigious horse races in the whole world.
Find out more about the race by visiting the Kentucky Derby website.
🐎 How did the Kentucky Derby get its name?
There are very few sporting events in America that have such a rich history and popularity as the Kentucky Derby. With traditions such as wearing large beautiful hats and singing My Old Kentucky Home, make it a celebration of both southern culture and the race itself. The race was nicknamed The Run for the Roses and is often considered “the most exciting two minutes in sports.”
It was founded by Meriwether Lewis Clark, stemming from a trip to Europe. He became inspired by his travels and horse race experiences. Upon returning, he was determined to make a spectacle horse racing event in the States. With the help of his uncles, he was able to get the necessary land and started the Louisville Jockey Club to raise funds to build the racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky.
The track opened its gates to the first Kentucky Derby back on May 17th, 1875, with a total of 15 three-year-old Thoroughbred horses that raced one and a half miles. The very first winner was Aristides, and while the race has undergone changes since the first race, it still embraces the integrity of that first race set forth by Clark.
