Ingredient Notes:

  • Butterscotch Schnapps – The base layer of this shot provides the signature buttery flavor. For best results, keep your butterscotch schnapps chilled.
  • Bailey’s Irish Cream – This creamy liqueur creates the top layer and adds richness to the shot. Make sure it’s well-chilled for the best layering effect.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Irish Cream Options – While Bailey’s is traditional, any Irish cream liqueur will work for this recipe.
  • Garnish Ideas – Add a dollop of whipped cream on top for an extra-decadent presentation.
  • Shot Glass Options – While a clear shot glass shows off the layered effect best, any shot glass will work.

Recipe Tips

  • Chill both liqueurs thoroughly before making the shot – cold liquids layer better.
  • Keep the spoon as close to the liquid surface as possible while pouring.
  • Pour the Bailey’s very slowly to maintain distinct layers.
  • If the layers mix slightly, let the shot rest for a minute – it will often separate again.

Storing Tips

  • Storage: These shots are best made fresh to order.
  • Prep Ahead: Keep both liqueurs well-chilled in the refrigerator.
  • Make Ahead: While you can pre-mix the ingredients, you’ll lose the signature layered effect.
  • Refrigeration: Both liqueurs should be stored in a cool, dark place and don’t require refrigeration, but chilling them helps with layering.

Recipe FAQs

Why isn’t my shot layering properly?

Make sure both liqueurs are well-chilled, and pour the Bailey’s very slowly over the back of a spoon. The spoon should be held just above the butterscotch schnapps layer.

Can I make multiple shots at once?

Yes! Just maintain the same ratio of 1½ oz butterscotch schnapps to ½ oz Bailey’s per shot. Layer each shot individually for the best presentation.

How strong is a Buttery Nipple shot?

This shot is relatively mild compared to other shots, as both liqueurs are typically around 15-17% alcohol by volume.

Can I serve this as a bigger cocktail instead of a shot?

Yes! You can scale up the recipe and serve it in a martini glass over ice, though you’ll lose the layered effect when serving it this way.
