Substitutions and Variations

  • Different pudding flavor: Use vanilla, white chocolate, or cookies-and-cream pudding if you want a lighter-looking cup.
  • Different cookies: Chocolate graham crackers or chocolate wafer cookies can replace Oreos. The color won’t be quite as dark.
  • Berry mixture: Swap some of the strawberries for raspberries or blueberries. Dice larger berries small so the layers stay tidy.
  • Candy decorations: Add candy flowers or chocolate rocks for more of a garden theme.
  • Extra chocolatey: Fold 1 or 2 tablespoons of melted chocolate into the pudding.
  • Whipped topping: Use thawed whipped topping in place of homemade whipped cream for a sweeter, firmer cream layer.
  • Change the theme: Add candy carrots and mini eggs for an Easter theme or plastic bugs and candy pumpkins for a Halloween one.

  • 20 to 24 Oreo cookies crushed finely, about 2 cups of crumbs
  • 1 ½ cups heavy whipping cream cold

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Refrigerate 10 minutes to fully set.
  • Transfer into a piping bag fitted with a round tip (optional).

Prepare the Oreo “Soil”

  • Crush Oreo cookies in a food processor until they resemble fine soil. If you don't have a food processor, you can put them in a large Ziploc bag and bash them with a rolling pin.

Six dessert cups with chocolate crumb topping, two with piped frosting on top.
  • Chill until serving.

Just Before Serving

  • Add a gummy worm to each cup, partially tucking it into the soil.
Six dirt cup desserts with gummy worms and whipped cream, plus candies and strawberries.
  • Add a small mint sprig for a fresh “garden” look.
  • Nestle something from the garden – an edible small flower, or a couple of thin strawberry slices – gently into the top layer.

Notes

  • Use food-safe flowers: Only add edible, pesticide-free flowers to the cups, not random ones from the backyard!
  • Add candy last: Gummy worms and candy decorations can get sticky in the refrigerator, so add them on top right before serving.
  • Choose the right cups: Smaller cups make neater party portions, while larger jars give you more room for extra layers.
  • Don’t over-decorate: Less is more, so aim for a cute little garden look, not “the weeds won”.

Kim’s Top Tips

  • Use clear cups: Clear cups display the pudding, berries, cream, and Oreo layers, which is part of the appeal.
  • Crush the cookies finely: Fine crumbs look more like soil and sit better on top of the whipped cream.
  • Dice the berries small: Little strawberry pieces layer better and won’t slide down the sides of the cup.
  • Chill before decorating: Add the gummy worms, mint, and edible flowers close to serving, so they look fresh.
  • Pipe the cream if you want cleaner layers: A piping bag helps keep whipped cream off the sides of the cups.

How to Store

  • Refrigerator: Cover the assembled dirt cups and refrigerate them for up to 2 days. I recommend adding the gummy worms, mint, and edible flowers just before serving. You do need to keep the cups chilled because they contain whipped cream, milk-based pudding, and fresh berries.
  • Freezing: Don’t freeze these dirt cups. The pudding, whipped cream, and strawberries can turn watery after thawing.

Serving Suggestions

For drinks, Strawberry Tea would match the berry layer, and Homemade Limeade is a refreshing option that contrasts with chocolate and fruit. Garden Party Dirt Cups FAQs

Can I use homemade pudding for these dirt cups?

Yes, homemade chocolate pudding is fine if it’s thick enough to layer. Let it cool completely before assembling the cups, or it can soften the whipped cream.

Why are my dirt cup layers messy?

The pudding or whipped cream may be too loose, or the strawberries may be cut too large. Small diced berries and thick pudding make the layers easier to control.

Can kids help make these?

Yes, kids can help crush cookies, layer pudding, and add gummy worms. An adult should handle any knife work for the strawberries.

Why won’t my instant pudding set?

You need cold milk to thicken the instant pudding properly. Warm milk won’t set it the same way.

Where can I get edible flowers?

You need food-grade flowers for this dessert. You can find them online, such as these viola flowers or these larger mixed buds. For more color, sprinkle on some calendula, rose and cornflower petals too.
