  • Perfect for Summer Parties: Whether you’re hosting a pool party, beach birthday bash, or end-of-summer celebration, these ocean-themed cupcakes fit the bill perfectly. They work beautifully for kids’ parties, baby showers with a beach theme, or casual summer get-togethers.
  • Kid-Friendly Fun: Children absolutely love helping decorate these cupcakes, making them a fantastic activity for parties or rainy day baking. The decorating process is forgiving and creative, so kids can express themselves while making treats they’ll be proud to share.

What You Need To Make This Beach Cupcakes Recipe

Ingredients for beach cupcakes sitting on a marbled countertop.
  • Yellow cake mix and ingredients needed per box – A yellow cake mix creates the perfect “sand-colored” base for these beach cupcakes. Feel free to use a homemade yellow cake recipe if you prefer baking from scratch.
  • Blue frosting – Store-bought blue frosting saves time and represents the ocean water. You can make your own buttercream and add blue food coloring if preferred.
  • White frosting – White frosting combines with the blue to create realistic-looking ocean waves and water. Canned frosting makes this recipe super quick.
  • Gold and blue sanding sugar – Sanding sugar has larger crystals that mimic real sand and ocean sparkle. The gold represents beach sand while the blue adds extra ocean shimmer.
  • White and gold pearl sugar decorations – These pearl decorations add dimension and shine, resembling pearls from the ocean or bubbles in the water.
  • Sugar shell decorations – Edible sugar shells add an authentic beach touch. They’re available on Amazon or at craft stores in various colors and shapes.
  • Ocean animal sugar decorations – Sea creature decorations like fish, dolphins, and sharks make these cupcakes come alive. Kids especially love choosing which ocean animals to place on their cupcakes.
  • Paper drink/craft umbrellas – These miniature umbrellas are the perfect finishing touch. They’re optional but add a fun, festive element.

Substitutions and Additions

  • For the cake base – Any flavor cupcake works here, but vanilla, funfetti, or even coconut cake would be delicious alternatives to yellow cake mix.
  • Homemade frosting – Make your own vanilla buttercream and divide it, adding blue food coloring to one portion for a homemade version.
  • Graham cracker “sand” – Crushed graham crackers make excellent edible sand and add a nice flavor element alongside the sanding sugar.
  • Teddy Grahams on beach towels – Place a teddy graham on a peach ring gummy to create an adorable bear lounging on a pool float.
  • Swedish Fish – These classic candies are perfect for ocean-themed cupcakes and can be pressed into the frosting before it sets.
  • Gummy sharks – Add gummy sharks for a fun Shark Week twist or to tie into movies like Jaws or The Meg.
  • Colored sanding sugar – Try pink for a tropical sunset beach theme or turquoise for a Caribbean ocean look.
  • White chocolate seashells – Melt white chocolate and use a shell mold to create your own edible decorations.

How to Make Beach Cupcakes

See the recipe card below for a complete list of ingredients and measurements.

Collage of decorating beach cupcakes.
  1. Bake cupcakes per recipe and cool completely.
  2. Gently and lightly mix blue and white frosting together to create an ocean water look.
  3. Pipe a thin base of frosting on each cupcake. (Photo 1)
  4. Use a small round flat instrument ( I used a decorating knife but a butter knife is perfect as well ) to create waves in the frosting.
  5. For beach only looks dip cupcake upside down in blue or gold sanding sugar.
  6. Place desired sugar decorations on top. (Photo 2)
  7. Add umbrella if desired.
  8. For ½ beach, ½ ocean looks dip only half of the cupcake in sanding sugar.
  9. Next, add a dollop of blue & white ocean frosting to the other half of the cupcake.
  10. Place desired sugar decorations on top.
  11. Add umbrella if desired.

Recipe Tips

  • Make ahead – You can bake the cupcakes up to 24 hours in advance and store them in an airtight container, then decorate them on the day of your event for the freshest look.
  • Consistency matters – If your frosting is too stiff, it won’t swirl nicely. Let it sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes or microwave for 5-10 seconds to soften slightly.
  • Create variety – Make a batch with different designs so guests can choose their favorite. Some people love the all-sand look while others prefer the ocean theme.
  • Steady hand for dipping – When dipping cupcakes into sanding sugar, hold them firmly but gently and press straight down for even coverage.
  • Secure decorations – Press sugar decorations gently into the frosting so they’re secure but be careful not to break delicate pieces like shells.
  • Color coordination – Match your sanding sugar and frosting colors to your party theme. Light blue works for tropical beaches while darker blue suits ocean themes.
  • Use cupcake liners – Beach-themed or blue cupcake liners add an extra decorative touch and make the cupcakes easier to serve.

Storing Beach Themed Cupcakes

  • Transporting: If taking these to a party, transport them in a cupcake carrier with a secure lid. The umbrellas are delicate, so you might want to add them after arrival.
  • Storage: Keep these beach cupcakes covered at room temperature since the decorations and sanding sugar do best when not refrigerated. The sugar can become sticky in humid conditions.
  • Room Temperature: Store your beach cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Make sure the container is tall enough that the decorations and umbrellas don’t get crushed.
  • Refrigerator: If your kitchen is very warm or if you used homemade buttercream that needs refrigeration, you can store them in the fridge for up to 5 days. Let them come to room temperature for 15-20 minutes before serving for the best taste and texture.
  • Freezing: I don’t recommend freezing decorated cupcakes because the decorations and sanding sugar won’t hold up well. However, you can freeze unfrosted cupcakes for up to 2 months and decorate them after thawing.
  • Leftover frosting: Store any extra frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Bring it to room temperature before using it again.

These beach cupcakes are perfect on their own, but they’re even better as part of a full beach-themed party spread. Serve them alongside my Shark Week Snack Cups for a fun ocean-inspired dessert table, or pair them with Shark Bite Drink for a complete summer party menu.

For a beach birthday party, set up a dessert table with these cupcakes as the centerpiece. Add some Easy Hot Party Dips for savory options and include tropical drinks like Sparkling Summer Blackberry Basil Cocktail for the adults.

Beach Cupcakes FAQs

Can I freeze these cupcakes?

No, these beach cupcakes should not be frozen once decorated because the sanding sugar, frosting texture, and sugar decorations won’t hold up well during freezing and thawing. If you need to prep ahead, freeze the unfrosted cupcakes for up to 2 months and decorate them after thawing.

Can I make these cupcakes ahead of time?

Yes, you can make the cupcakes up to 24 hours ahead of time and store them in an airtight container at room temperature. For the best results, decorate them on the day of your event so the colors stay vibrant and the decorations look fresh.

How long will these cupcakes last?

These beach cupcakes should be kept in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Make sure the container is tall enough to prevent crushing the decorations and umbrellas. The sanding sugar may become slightly sticky in humid conditions but will still taste great.

Can I use homemade frosting for beach cupcakes?

Absolutely! Homemade vanilla buttercream works beautifully for these beach cupcakes. Just make two batches or divide one large batch, leaving half white and coloring the other half blue with food coloring. Homemade frosting actually pipes more smoothly than store-bought.

Can I make beach cupcakes with different cake flavors?

Yes! While yellow cake creates a nice “sandy” base color, you can use any cake flavor you prefer. Vanilla, funfetti, coconut, or even lemon cupcakes would all taste amazing with the beach theme. The decorations work with any flavor base.
