What’s in This Marshmallow Skewers Recipe?

Ingredients for halloween themed marshmallow treats sitting on a countertop.
  • Large marshmallows: These fluffy treats serve as the base of your mummy skewers. Their soft texture and sweetness make them ideal for creating a delicious focal point for your spooky snack.
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips: Perfect for melting, these chocolate chips will give your mummies that oozy wrap-around look. The rich flavor complements the marshmallows beautifully, adding a decadent touch to your festive treat.
  • Vegetable shortening: This ingredient helps achieve a smooth, shiny chocolate coating when mixed with the chocolate chips. It also prevents the chocolate from seizing and ensures easy dipping.
  • Powdered sugar: Often used to create frosting and glazes, powdered sugar adds a touch of sweetness to the chocolate mixture. It can also be dusted on top of the finished mummies for an extra festive flair.
  • Meringue powder: Stabilizes your icing, helping it hold its shape and prevent it from becoming too runny. It also adds a hint of sweetness without an overpowering taste.
  • Vanilla extract: A staple in many dessert recipes, vanilla extract enhances the overall flavor of your mummy skewers. Its warm and sweet notes pair wonderfully with both the marshmallows and chocolate.
  • Corn syrup: This ingredient adds shine and smoothness to your chocolate coating, making it easier to work with. It also helps maintain moisture, ensuring your treats remain fresh and gooey.
  • Water: Water can adjust the consistency of your chocolate coating and help control how easily your chocolate melts and adheres to the marshmallows.
  • White food coloring: This optional ingredient can add a spooky, ghostly finish to your mummies. It can lighten chocolate or icing to give perfect coloring, ensuring an eerie appearance.
  • Candy eyeballs: These playful decorations give your mummies personality and charm. Use various sizes and styles. Candy eyeballs will surely add a fun touch to your Halloween treats.
  • Orange and black sugar sprinkles: These festive sprinkles add color and enhance the Halloween theme. They can be sprinkled on the chocolate coating for an eye-catching and festive finale.
  • Large lollipop sticks or skewers: Essential for assembling your mummy treats, they make it easy to hold and enjoy. They come in various lengths and designs, allowing you to choose the perfect ones for your fun Halloween creation.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Vegetarian-Friendly: Instead of regular marshmallows, use vegan marshmallows, which are made without gelatin. This ensures a plant-based option for your spooky treats.
  • Gluten-Free: Pay attention to labels while selecting chocolate chips, as some may contain gluten. Opt for gluten-free chocolate brands or make your chocolate coating for peace of mind.
  • Nut Allergies: If you have nut allergies, ensure that the chocolate and any additional toppings or sprinkles are nut-free. You can also substitute chocolate with carob for a nut-free alternative.
  • Flavor Variations: For a unique twist, add flavor extracts like almond or coconut to the chocolate mixture. You can also dip the marshmallows in flavored candy melts instead of chocolate.
  • Fruity Additions: Incorporate fresh fruits by adding sliced bananas or strawberries onto the skewers before wrapping them in chocolate, adding a fruity burst to your mummies.
  • Spooky Sprinkles: To enhance the festive look and feel of your mummies, get creative with additional sprinkles, such as Halloween-themed confetti or edible glitter.
  • Dipped Pretzel Sticks: Add pretzel sticks as a crunchy base for a salty-sweet combination before dipping the marshmallows. This can provide an exciting texture that balances the sweetness.
  • Peanut Butter: For a nuttier flavor, drizzle melted peanut butter over the chocolate before it sets, or use peanut butter chips for an additional layer of indulgence.

How to Make Marshmallow Mummy Skewers (step-by-step directions)

  1. Take the bamboo sticks or stainless steel skewers and thread three marshmallows onto each, ensuring they are grouped at one end. (Photo 1)
  2. Arrange the marshmallow skewers on a baking sheet and freeze them for 10 minutes. This step helps the chocolate coating adhere better. (Photo 2)
  3. While the marshmallows are chilling, melt the chocolate chips and shortening. You can use a double boiler over low heat or microwave them in 20-second increments until completely smooth. (Photo 3)
  4. Once the chocolate is melted, pour it into a tall glass. Remove the marshmallow skewers from the freezer and dip each skewer into the chocolate, coating the marshmallows thoroughly. Allow any excess chocolate to drip off before placing them back on the baking sheet. (Photos 4, 5 & 6)

Recipe Tips

  • Use Quality Chocolate: For the best flavor, select high quality chocolate chips or coating. Dark, milk or white chocolate can all work beautifully.
  • Chill Before Dipping: Make sure the marshmallows are well-chilled before dipping to ensure the chocolate sets nicely and doesn’t melt too quickly.
  • Experiment with Toppings: Don’t be afraid to mix and match sprinkles, nuts, or crushed cookies for different textures and flavors on your mummies.
  • Keep It Fun: Involve kids in decorating; it’s an excellent activity for motivating creativity!
  • Work in Batches: If you’re making a lot of skewers, consider working in small batches to keep the process manageable and enjoyable.

Storing Tips

To maintain the freshness of your marshmallow mummy skewers, store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days.

If you want to preserve them longer, you can freeze the skewers. To do this, wrap each skewer in plastic to prevent freezer burn and place them in a resealable freezer storage bag. The marshmallow mummies can be frozen for up to 1 month.

When you’re ready to enjoy them, remove them from the freezer and let them thaw at room temperature for about 30 minutes before serving.

Serving Suggestions

These marshmallow mummy skewers are a delightful sweet treat on their own, but they can be paired with various fun accompaniments to create an enticing dessert spread. Here are some ideas:

  • Hot Chocolate Bar: Serve alongside a cocoa station with various toppings, such as whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and marshmallows, to complement the mummies.
  • Fruit Platters: To contrast the sweetness of the marshmallows, offer an assortment of fresh fruit, such as apple slices, grapes, and berries.
  • Halloween Punch: Create a spooky drink to match your theme, like a fruity punch with floating gummy worms or ghost-shaped ice cubes. Or go for a seasonal option such as apple shine sangria.
  • Decorated Cookies: Add spooky-themed cookies—think ghost, pumpkin, and spider cookies—to enhance the Halloween atmosphere.
  • Popcorn Mix: For a crunchy side, serve a savory-sweet popcorn blend, perhaps drizzled with chocolate and sprinkled with candy corn.
  • Cheese Platter: To balance the dessert offerings, include a cheese board with a mix of cheeses, crackers, and seasonal nuts for a savory touch.

Recipe FAQs

Can I use different types of marshmallows?

Absolutely! While regular marshmallows work best for these mummies, you can experiment with mini marshmallows for smaller skewers or large marshmallows for a more substantial treat.

What can I do with leftover chocolate?

Any leftover chocolate can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge. You can re-melt it for future dipping or use it to create chocolate-covered fruits or snacks.

Can these skewers be made ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the marshmallow mummy skewers a day in advance and store them in an airtight container. Ensure they’re kept in a cool place to maintain the chocolate’s firmness.

How do I know when the icing is ready?

The icing is ready when it forms soft peaks that hold their shape when you lift the mixer. Be careful not to overbeat, as this can make the icing grainy.
