Recipe Ingredients

Ingredients for a recipe, including sugars, butter, milk, and dough.

Ingredient Notes:

  • Refrigerated crescent roll dough – An 8-ounce tube of crescent roll dough works perfectly for this recipe, though crescent roll sheets are even better if your store carries them since you won’t need to pinch seams together. The buttery, flaky dough creates the perfect base for these quick cinnamon rolls.
  • Unsalted butter – Two tablespoons of melted unsalted butter brushed over the dough adds richness and helps the cinnamon sugar mixture stick properly. You can substitute salted butter if that’s what you have, just reduce any added salt in the recipe.
  • Light brown sugar – Two tablespoons of packed light brown sugar provides that classic caramel-like sweetness that pairs beautifully with cinnamon. The molasses content in brown sugar adds depth of flavor that white sugar alone can’t provide.
  • Ground cinnamon – One tablespoon of ground cinnamon gives these rolls their signature warm, spicy flavor. Fresh ground cinnamon will give you the most potent flavor, but store-bought ground cinnamon works perfectly fine.
  • Granulated sugar – One tablespoon of white sugar mixed with the brown sugar and cinnamon creates the perfect balance of sweetness and helps create that slightly crunchy exterior when it caramelizes in the air fryer.
  • Vanilla extract – Half a teaspoon of vanilla extract in the glaze adds a subtle floral note that complements the cinnamon beautifully, though it’s optional if you prefer a simpler glaze.
  • Powdered sugar – Half a cup of powdered sugar creates the smooth, sweet glaze that makes these cinnamon rolls irresistible. The fine texture dissolves easily and creates the perfect consistency for drizzling.
  • Milk – One to two tablespoons of milk thins the powdered sugar to create the perfect glaze consistency. Start with one tablespoon and add more as needed to reach your desire

Substitutions and Additions

  • Different dough options – You can substitute puff pastry, pizza dough, or even homemade yeast dough for the crescent roll dough. Puff pastry will give you extra flaky layers, while pizza dough creates a chewier texture.
  • Butter alternatives – Replace the melted butter with softened butter mixed directly into the cinnamon sugar for easier spreading, or use coconut oil for a dairy-free option.
  • Sugar variations – Swap light brown sugar for dark brown sugar for deeper molasses flavor, or use coconut sugar for a less processed option with subtle caramel notes.
  • Spice additions – Add a pinch of nutmeg, cardamom, or allspice to the cinnamon mixture for more complex flavors, or try pumpkin pie spice for a fall twist.
  • Nuts and extras – Fold chopped pecans, walnuts, or mini chocolate chips into the cinnamon sugar mixture before rolling for added texture and flavor.
  • Glaze alternatives – Replace the simple glaze with cream cheese frosting by mixing 4 oz softened cream

Recipe Tips

  • If you prefer, you can soften the butter and then mix it with the cinnamon and sugar. Then, spread that mixture onto the dough for your filling.
  • The crescent roll dough sheets are hard to find; however, if your store has them, they work great for this recipe because you don’t need to worry about pinching the seams together.
  • Use a sharp knife to slice the log into an even-sized piece.
  • Depending on the size of your air fryer basket, you may need to make these in batches. Don’t overcrowd your air fryer basket.
  • For easy cleanup, you can line your air fryer basket with a piece of parchment paper.

Air Fryer vs Oven Cinnamon Rolls

The biggest difference between air fryer and oven cinnamon rolls is texture and timing. Air fryer versions cook in about 8-10 minutes compared to 15-20 minutes in the oven, and they develop a more pronounced crispy exterior due to the concentrated, circulating heat.

Air Fryer Benefits:

  • Faster cooking time (8-10 minutes vs 15-20)
  • Crispier exterior texture
  • No preheating large oven
  • More energy efficient
  • Perfect for small batches

When to Choose Oven:

  • Making large batches (12+ rolls)
  • Prefer softer all-around texture
  • Making from-scratch yeast dough
  • Want to use traditional baking dishes

For most home cooks making 6-8 rolls, the air fryer is the clear winner for convenience and texture.

Storing Tips

  • Refrigerator: Store leftover cinnamon rolls in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.
  • Freezing: You can also freeze these cinnamon rolls baked or unbaked in a freezer-safe container or freezer bag for up to three months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.
  • Reheating: Reheat the cinnamon rolls in the air fryer for 2-3 minutes at 320 degrees f. You can also microwave them for about 20 seconds.
