Step One: Start by preheating the oven and greasing our whoopie pie pan. Then, in a bowl, add your dry ingredients for the cakes and mix to combine.

Step Two: Next, you will grab a mixer and beat the butter, brown sugar, egg, and vanilla.

Step Three: Alternate from milk to the dry ingredients, incorporating it into the batter. Then, once well mixed, fold in the chocolate chips.

Step Four: Drop the batter onto the baking sheet and bake as directed. Then repeat the steps to cook all the cookie batter. Let the whoopie pies cool. (Photo 1)

Step Five: With a hand mixer you are going to create the butter and sugars for the frosting, until nice and creamy.

Step Six: Then mix the milk and vanilla to create a thick frosting. Then, fold in the chocolate chips once it is the right consistency.

Step Seven: Add about 2 tablespoons of frosting on one whoopie pie and place the top whoopie on top to make a sandwich. (Photos 2 & 3)

How to Store

Room temperature or Fridge – You can store these whoopie pies at room temperature or in the fridge. If your home is on the warmer side you will want to refrigerate as the buttercream frosting can break down if it gets too hot.

Freezer – You can also freeze these chocolate chip cake cookies as well. Just place in a freezer friendly container or wrap individually then freeze. They will freeze for 2-3 months.

Variations To Recipe

  • Use different flavors of chocolate chips, like white chocolate, peanut butter chips, etc.
  • Feel free to use a different flavor of frosting. The chocolate frosting makes these whoopie pies extra rich.
  • Leave the chocolate chips out of the frosting for a less textured frosting.
  • Roll the edges in sprinkles to dress up the whoopie pies. The sprinkles will stick to the frosting.

Chocolate Chip Whoopie Pies FAQs

Why do you use a whoopie pie pan?

Using a whoopie pie pan creates the perfect round cakes that work for sandwiching together. Otherwise, you will find the batter is too wet and will spread and you will not get the nice round cakes.

How to know when whoopie pies are done?

Take a toothpick and stick in the center of the cakes, and if it comes out clean of wet batter the pies are done. Don’t overbake the cakes or they will dry out quite a bit.

Can you stack whoopie pies?

If you stack whoopie pies you need wax paper or wrapped in plastic wrap so the cookie cakes don’t stick together. Otherwise, you will find it is a mess and you won’t have nice clean whoopie pies.
