What Are Whoopie Pies?
Whoopie Pies, known as moon pies, is an American classic dessert. They consist of two round, mound-shaped cake-like cookies (often chocolate-flavored) sandwiching a sweet, creamy filling.
Originating from the Amish tradition, these treats are not quite a cookie, not quite a cake, and definitely not a pie, but a delightful concoction that transcends categorization. Their unique name is said to come from the exclamation of joy, “Whoopie!”, that children would shout upon seeing a delicious whoopie pie in their lunchboxes.

- Hershey powder: Adds the irresistible, rich chocolate flavor that makes this dessert delightful.
- Baking soda: A leavening agent that helps our baked goods rise to perfection.
- Kosher salt: Enhances the flavors of the other ingredients and contrasts with the sweetness.
- Sweet cream butter, softened: Adds a rich, creamy flavor and contributes to the soft, moist texture of the baked goods.
- Vegetable shortening: Gives the baked items a light, flaky texture.
- Dark brown sugar: Imparts a deep, caramel-like sweetness that complements the chocolate flavors beautifully.
- Large egg: Acts as a binding agent, adding moisture and assisting with the rising process.
- Pure vanilla extract: Enhances the flavors, bringing out the chocolatey goodness.
- Whole milk: Provides moisture and helps bind the ingredients together, resulting in a smooth batter.
Chocolate Frosting
- Powdered sugar: Adds sweetness to the frosting and gives it a smooth, spreadable consistency.
- Sweet cream butter, softened: Makes the frosting rich and creamy.
- Heavy cream: Creates a silky texture in the frosting, making it light and fluffy.
- Hershey cocoa powder: Infuses the frosting with a deep chocolate flavor.
Topping
- Chocolate Godiva hearts: Add a touch of luxury and a burst of rich chocolate when bitten into.
- Semi-sweet chocolate to drizzle on top: Provides a beautiful finishing touch, enhancing the presentation while adding an extra layer of chocolatey deliciousness.
Substitutions and Variations
- Instead of chocolate filling, you can make vanilla buttercream filling for a more traditional whoopie pie.
- Can’t find Godiva chocolates? Use a Hershey’s or Dove’s heart instead.
- You can roll the edges of the filling in Valentine’s sprinkles or Red Hots for more Valentine’s Day flare.
- Add more flavor to your recipe using cherry or strawberry extract in your frosting.
