Ingredients For Easter Rice Krispie Treats

Cereal, pretzels, marshmallows, butter, salt, candy, melting chocolate, and sprinkles on a white surface.
  • Butter – Melted unsalted butter will be the primary component that binds all the ingredients together while adding a creamy, rich flavor.
  • Salt – Kosher salt is used to enhance the sweet flavors in the recipe and balance out the sweetness.
  • Marshmallows – Mini marshmallows, divided, not only provide a pleasant sweetness but also a unique texture to the treats.
  • Cereal – Rice Krispie Treats are a crispy rice cereal and is the main ingredient of the recipe, providing a crispy texture and distinctive taste.
  • Pretzels – Broken into pieces, these add a surprising crunch and a delightful hint of saltiness to the sweet treats.
  • Candy – Cadbury eggs, divided, are what make the treats special for Easter, adding a festive feel with their chocolatey goodness.
  • Melting chocolate – Ghirardelli and colored candy melts are used, lending a superb taste and adding aesthetically pleasing colors to the treats.
  • Sprinkles – Easter-themed, these are the finishing touch that visually enhances the treats, making them more appealing and fun for an Easter celebration.

Substitutions and Variations

  • Adding in extra marshmallows with the cereal creates a chewier rice crispy treat.
  • Adding a few drops of food coloring to the marshmallow will add a little pop to the color to these festive treats.
  • Make sure to allow the bars to set up before slicing, or they will fall apart.
  • Add some cooking spray to your hand and press down lightly on top of the bars to pack in the pan.
  • Use any chocolate you want, or leave off the chocolate if you prefer.
  • You can use any type of Easter candy to add to the top of the bars such as marshmallow peeps and jelly beans.
  • If you want, you can use gluten-free pretzels for a gluten-free dessert.
  • The sprinkles are optional. I like to find sprinkles that won’t be too hard to chew, as some are a bit hard.

See the recipe card below for a complete list of ingredients and measurements.

Expert Tips

  • Use fresh marshmallows for best results. If your marshmallows have hardened, they won’t melt properly and can result in tough rice crispy treats.
  • When melting the marshmallows, keep the heat low to prevent them from burning.
  • If your mixture is too sticky to handle, try greasing your hands with a bit of butter or non-stick spray. This will make it easier to press the mixture into the pan.
  • Don’t press the mixture into the pan too hard. Doing so can make the treats dense and hard. Instead, lightly press it until it’s evenly distributed.
  • Be patient when letting the treats harden. Cutting them before they’ve fully set can lead to them falling apart.
  • If you have leftover melted chocolate, store it in a ziploc bag and cut off the tip for easy drizzling for future use.

Storing Tips

Store these Easter bars in a sealed container at room temperature for up to a week. You will find these bars have a decent shelf life.

Want to save these for later? Add your bars to a freezer bag or airtight container and freeze for 3-4 months. Thaw on the counter at room temperature until thawed, and then enjoy.

Recipe FAQs

Is there a trick to cutting Rice Krispie Treats?

A sharp knife will make it easier to cut through the sticky marshmallow and crispy cereal mixture. You can grease the knife with butter, and it will help prevent the marshmallow from sticking to the knife.

How do you keep Rice Krispie treats from getting soggy?

Heat the marshmallows until they are just melted, as overheating them can cause the treats to become soggy. Also, make sure to allow the treats to fully cool before you place them into a sealed container.

Why are my homemade Rice Krispies treats hard?

If you pack the mixture too tightly into the pan, the treats can become dense and hard. Another issue could be overcooking the marshmallows. Both will cause you to end up with harder treats.
