Recipe Ingredients
Ingredient Notes:
- Sourdough Pretzel Bites – These salty and crunchy pretzel pieces are the base for this recipe. I like to use Synder’s Of Hanover Pretzels, as they are my favorite! However, you can use any brand that you enjoy.
- Salted Butter – You will need one stick of butter. For this recipe, I do recommend that you use a stick of butter, instead of the whipped-style butter. The whipped butter sometimes contains water which can make the pretzels soggy.
- Taco Seasoning – Homemade is always my preferred choice when it comes to seasoning mixes. However, the store-bought mixes will work also, so use whatever you have on hand.
See the recipe card below for a complete list of ingredients and measurements.
Substitutions and Additions
- Low Sodium – Make these lower in sodium by using lightly salted pretzels, unsalted butter, and low-sodium taco seasoning.
- Ranch seasoned – Use one tablespoon of taco seasoning and one tablespoon of ranch seasoning mix for tangy taco ranch pretzels.
- Spicy – Craving a little heat? Use a spicy taco seasoning, or add a dash of cayenne pepper to the seasoning mixture.
- Dairy-free – A neutral flavored oil such as vegetable oil or canola oil in place of the butter for a non-dairy option.

Recipe Tips
- I’ve found that an empty spice bottle is a great way to evenly sprinkle the taco seasoning on top of the pretzel pieces.
- If you want lightly seasoned pretzels, use only half the seasoning packet, which is .50 ounces or 1 tablespoon.
- It’s important that you lay the pretzels in a single layer, so you will need a large-rimmed baking sheet. If they are stacked on top of each other they may become a little soggy.
- There is no need to stir or flip the pretzels while they are baking, leave them be so that they toast up nicely.
Storing Tips
- Storage – Store the pretzels in an airtight container or Ziploc bag at room temperature for up to two weeks
- Make Ahead – You can make this taco-seasoned pretzel recipe up to 24 hours in advance. Just don’t forget to keep them airtight container to prevent them from going stale.
- Serving – When it comes to serving, place them in a large bowl and use a scoop or large spoon for serving.
Serving Suggestions
These seasoned pretzel bites are a go-to snack for our game-day parties. So, we like to pair them with other football snacks such as these Homemade Pizza Rolls, Baked Spinach and Artichoke Dip, or Stuffed Mushrooms with Bacon. You can’t go wrong with any of these tasty dishes.
Recipe FAQs
The best way to get the seasoning to stick to hard pretzels is to coat them in the form of fat. For this recipe, I used salted butter.
The only way to keep this fiesta-worthy snack from going stale is to make sure that you remove all the air from the storage bag or container. Keep this in mind when you choose your storage container. You don’t want to use one that is too large.
One of my favorite ways to use leftover taco pretzel bites is to crush them up in a food processor and then use them as breading for chicken breast or chicken tenders.
