Ingredients

A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Rice Krispies, mini marshmallows, candies, pretzels, butter, salt, and vanilla extract on a countertop.
  • Unsalted butter: This helps to melt the marshmallows smoothly and adds a rich flavor to the treats.
  • Mini marshmallows: The key ingredient that gives Rice Krispie Treats their signature gooey texture. We’ll be using some melted and some whole for extra texture.
  • Pure vanilla extract: A touch of vanilla enhances the overall flavor of the treats.
  • Salt: Just a pinch balances out the sweetness and brings out all the flavors.
  • Rice Krispies cereal: The star of the show, providing the crispy crunch we all love.
  • Halloween M&M’s: These add a festive touch, and a chocolatey flavor burst in every bite.
  • Candy corn: A quintessential Halloween candy that adds color and sweetness.
  • Mini pretzel twists: These add a salty crunch that contrasts nicely with the sweetness.
  • Sprinkles: For an extra festive touch and pop of color.
  • Green candy melts (optional): These can be drizzled on top for a spooky green effect.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Cereal substitutes: Try using Cocoa Krispies, Cocoa Pebbles, or cornflakes for a different flavor profile.
  • M&M varieties: Any color or variety of M&M’s will work. The “Ghoul’s Mix Milk Chocolate M&M’s” fits perfectly for Halloween.
  • Pretzel options: Experiment with different pretzel shapes like sticks, snaps, crisps, or waffles.
  • Additional mix-ins: For extra Halloween flair, consider adding chopped nuts, Halloween-themed sprinkles, or even some orange food coloring.
  • Marshmallow substitutes: If you’re out of mini marshmallows, you can use regular-sized ones, just chop them up a bit before melting.

How to Make Homemade Rice Krispie Treats (step-by-step directions)

Collage of making Rice Krispie Treats.
  1. Begin by preparing your baking pan. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch pan and line it with parchment paper. The light coating of cooking spray will help the parchment paper stick to the pan, making it easier to pour in the mixture and remove the treats later.
  2. In a large pot, melt the butter over low heat. This slow melting process helps prevent burning. (Photo 1)
  3. Set aside 1 1/2 cups of marshmallows for later use. Add the remaining marshmallows to the melted butter. Keep the heat low and stir constantly until you achieve a smooth, fully melted consistency. (Photos 2 & 3)
  4. Remove the pot from the heat. Quickly stir in the vanilla extract and salt to enhance the flavors. (Photo 4)

  1. Now it’s time to add the fun stuff! Gently fold in the Rice Krispies cereal, reserved mini marshmallows, mini pretzel twists, M&M’s, candy corn, and sprinkles. Mix until everything is evenly distributed. (Photos 5 & 6)
  2. Transfer the mixture to your prepared baking pan. Using a rubber spatula, spread it out gently into an even layer. Be careful not to press too hard, as this can result in dense, hard treats. (Photo 7)
  3. If you’re using the optional green candy melts, now’s the time to prepare them. Melt them in a piping bag using your microwave’s low or defrost setting. Massage the bag every 30 seconds to ensure even melting. (Photo 8)

  1. Allow the melted candy to cool slightly, then snip a small piece off the tip of the piping bag. Drizzle the green candy over your Rice Krispie treats. If desired, immediately add any additional toppings like extra M&M’s, pretzels, candy corn, or sprinkles. (Photo 9)
  2. Let your creation cool on the counter for 30 minutes to 1 hour before cutting into squares. Then enjoy your spooktacular Halloween Rice Krispie Treats! (Photo 10)

Recipe Tips

  • Use fresh marshmallows for the best texture and ease of melting.
  • Keep the heat low when melting the marshmallows to prevent burning.
  • Don’t overmix the cereal mixture, as this can lead to tough treats.
  • Use a greased spatula or wax paper to press the mixture into the pan to prevent sticking.
  • For cleaner cuts, use a plastic knife or grease your knife before slicing the treats.

Storing Tips

These Halloween Rice Krispie Treats are best enjoyed the same day they’re made, when they’re at their freshest and gooeyest. However, if you have leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.

Avoid refrigerating the treats, as this can make them hard and affect their texture. If you need to stack the treats for storage, place a sheet of wax paper between layers to prevent sticking.

While it’s possible to freeze Rice Krispie Treats, this recipe is not recommended due to the various mix-ins that may not freeze well.

Serving Suggestions

These Halloween Rice Krispie Treats are perfect on their own, but why not make them part of a larger Halloween spread? Serve them alongside our Halloween Oreo Cake Bars for a variety of sweet treats. For a savory contrast, offer some Easy Mummy Jalapeno Poppers.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make these treats ahead of time?

While they’re best fresh, you can make them a day in advance. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.

My treats turned out too hard. What went wrong?

Overcooking the marshmallows or pressing the mixture too firmly into the pan can result in hard treats. Keep the heat low and be gentle when spreading the mixture.

Can I use regular-sized marshmallows instead of mini?

Yes, you can. Just chop them into smaller pieces before melting for more even distribution.

How can I make these treats gluten-free?

Use gluten-free Rice Krispies cereal and ensure all your add-ins (like pretzels and candies) are gluten-free.

Can I use different shaped cookie cutters instead of cutting into squares?

Absolutely! Just be sure to grease the cookie cutters well to prevent sticking.
